New at the Chantix route been smoking more while managing a terminal ilness

Posted in Group:

It is day 12 since I started taking Chantix. On day 8 I laid down my smokes hopefully for good. I have been a smoker of at least a pack a day since I was 16, that is 37 years. Recently it has been two packs solid per day. My withdrawls are not too bad, it is nothing like withdrawing if you don't have your Oxycontin or Oxycodone medication, which I take regularly for a degenerative disc disease and from general pain in my bones from Primary Amyloidosis. Amyloidosis is a systemic terminal illness that effects the blood stream proteins and they deposit irregularly on my heart causing it not to refill properly. Life expectancy is usually 6 months to 3 years. It has been 2 years since I been diagnosed. More about the cigarettes. The cigarettes had been keeping me awake at night. Literally all night every night. Since I laid down my smokes I am sleeping much better and it suppose to have dramatic affects on my health that aren't apparent. I thought what else do I have to lose. I never been able to get past 5days with no cigarettes. So wish me luck.

Chantix has caused my emotions to run a roller coaster. I have been supressing them refusing to cry because of my terminal illness, but Chantix pulls my feelings right tot he forfront. I am glad but sometimes it is alot to handle since I live alone and not dating anyone. As weird dreams, I have had a much better sleep and more dreams that I can remember. I think thats healthy overall. So I have made it another night without any tobacco.

Tears are good for us honey & I understand terminal illnesses as my mother passed in '81 from the most aggressive form of brain cancer. Your not alone as you have me here to talk with anytime you feel like it (unless my computer takes a poo).

Prior to chantix have you ever tried the e-cigarette? I've read others posts on it & read other articles & thought it would be counter productive.

Congrats on another day honey & when I decide to quit I wouldnt be capable of talking about it for a while as that would make me want to smoke so KUDOS to you for teaching the rest of us here.

Mike, how did you make out? It's been a couple of months. I just quit today and so far not so bad. Without Chantix I would be homicidal or suicidal. The dreams are weird but not too bad. I wake up in a sweat sometimes and feel queasy a lot. I smoked a pack a day since I was 17 and I am 61. I need to do this for my self as well as my family. I hope you made it ok.

I was just diagnosed with COPD and after reading about it and my doctor telling me I have to quit, I started chantix. I have smoked for about 18 years at about a pack and a half a day. I have already noticed a change in my smoking....I dont want one very often and when I break down and smoke, i feel sick but im hard headed and do it anyway lol, go figure! Anyway, I am hoping to talk to someone who is using chantix to quit as well so we can maybe support eachother? Im trying to get ideas about what to do when I want one the most....after meals, morning coffee, ect? Any input would be awesome!!!
